Homespoken Privacy Policy

Homespoken ("we", "us") is a language-learning app that teaches heritage languages through spoken conversation. This policy explains what information the app collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. We do not sell your data, we do not show ads, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.

Information we collect

• Account information. When you first open the app we create an anonymous account identified by a random user ID. If you choose to sign up, we also store your email address and, optionally, a display name.
• Voice audio. When you speak during lessons, placement checks, or tutor conversations, your audio is sent to our servers to be transcribed. Audio is processed to produce a text transcript and is not retained as a recording.
• Learning content and progress. Conversation transcripts, lesson progress, practice results, streaks, and preferences (language, goals, level) are stored with your account so your learning continues across sessions and devices.
• Usage information. Basic product interaction data, such as session length and features used, to make the app work and improve it.

How your information is used

Only to provide the product: transcribing your speech, generating tutor replies and feedback, synthesizing audio pronunciation, saving your progress, and enforcing fair-use limits. We do not use your data for advertising and do not sell or rent it to anyone.

Service providers

Homespoken relies on a small number of infrastructure providers that process data on our behalf:

• Supabase — authentication and database hosting (your account and progress data).
• Hugging Face — speech-recognition and speech-synthesis processing (your voice audio, transiently).
• Anthropic — the AI language tutor that generates conversation replies and feedback (your conversation text).

Each provider processes data solely to deliver the service.

Data retention and deletion

Your data is kept while your account exists. You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time in the app: Profile → Settings → Delete account. Deletion is immediate and irreversible.

Children

Homespoken is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.
