Homespoken (“we”, “us”) is a language-learning app that teaches heritage languages through spoken conversation. This policy explains what information the app collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. We do not sell your data, we do not show ads, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.

Information we collect

• Account information. When you first open the app we create an anonymous account identified by a random user ID. If you choose to sign up, we also store your email address and, optionally, a display name. If you sign in with Apple, Apple decides which address we receive: your real one if you choose Share My Email, or an Apple private relay address if you choose Hide My Email. Changing that choice later in your Apple Account applies to future sign-ins; it does not retract the address we already hold. To remove an address you have already given us, delete your account — see Data retention and deletion below.

• Voice audio. When you speak during lessons, placement checks, or tutor conversations, your audio is sent to our servers to be transcribed. Audio is processed to produce a text transcript and is not retained as a recording.

• Learning content and progress. Conversation transcripts, lesson progress, practice results, streaks, and preferences (language, goals, level) are stored with your account so your learning continues across sessions and devices.

• Usage information. To understand how the app is used and what to improve, we record in-app events — screens reached during setup, lessons and practice sessions started and finished, conversation sessions and their length, community posts and replies, and errors you hit. These events carry the answers you gave during setup (language, level, goal, practice time, gender, age range, heritage country, topics, how you heard about us, whether you’ve tried other language-learning apps, and whether you allowed notifications, including anything you typed in an “Other” box), your app version and your device type. They also carry an approximate location worked out from your device’s internet (IP) address — country, region and city. Your IP address itself is discarded and is never stored alongside these events. Post and reply bodies are never sent — only that a post or reply happened. These events are not linked to your account, email or name — they are tied only to a random identifier for your install, which is reset if you sign out or delete your account. Because these events are not linked to your account, deleting your account does not remove them. You can turn this off at any time in Profile → Settings → Share usage data.

How your information is used

Only to provide the product: transcribing your speech, generating tutor replies and feedback, synthesizing audio pronunciation, saving your progress, and enforcing fair-use limits. We do not use your data for advertising and do not sell or rent it to anyone.

Service providers

Homespoken relies on a small number of infrastructure providers that process data on our behalf:

• Supabase — authentication and database hosting (your account and progress data).

• Modal — speech-recognition and speech-synthesis processing (your voice audio, transiently).

• Anthropic — the AI language tutor that generates conversation replies and feedback (your conversation text).

• PostHog — product analytics, hosted in Frankfurt, Germany (your anonymous in-app events; never your account, email, or conversation content).

Each provider processes data solely to deliver the service.

Data retention and deletion

Your data is kept while your account exists. You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time in the app: Profile → Settings → Delete account. Deletion is immediate and irreversible.

Children

Homespoken is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.
